StartupOS today unveiled the first generative AI-powered chatbot for scaling early-stage startups. Called Bolt Startup AI, the new tool is built on a proprietary large language model and blends human expertise with AI capabilities and a networking community. Bolt Startup AI offers founders actionable advice on market analysis, product fit, funding strategies, and more based on data from thousands of startups. Entrepreneurs can ask Bolt Startup AI for help with market analysis, product fit, and steps toward sustainable growth and receive customized feedback and direction. The new chatbot also suggests the most likely investors based on this information, and the most suitable mentors, with whom founders can connect through a matchmaking portal. Private equity, venture capital, and corporate VC customers benefit by asking Bolt Startup AI to identify top startup talent and technology on the StartupOS platform with specific criteria around business focus, metrics, and more. The mission of StartupOS is to level the playing field of innovation resources and to increase the quantity and quality of startups. Founder Paul Pluschkell was inspired to create a democratized startup platform after his son graduated from Stanford University with what he felt was greater access to capital and more mentors in the VC community than he did after twenty years in business. “We democratize access to the innovation tools, guidance, experts, mentors, and investors that very few people have access to,” Pluschkell said. Unlike conventional accelerators that have small cohorts for short durations, StartupOS boasts an expansive community of nearly 7,000 individuals, constituting what Pluschkell proudly calls the only AI-driven, “always-on” accelerator. The business model is built on corporates and accelerators that license the platform to spot high-value startups early. While founders can purchase a license for a nominal fee of $600, startups are not a significant driver for StartupOS and applicants to their sponsored pitch competitions receive one free year of premium access. “We don’t want to make our money off startups, and we don’t want to take equity from companies that don’t even yet know what that is,” Pluschkell said. “We want to make our money off organizations that benefit from startups. What I want to do is become a really friendly place for you to build, grow, and prosper,” he added. StartupOS is built on what Pluschkell calls “ingredients and recipes.” A “recipe” might be a business model canvas, pitch deck, or board report built on “ingredients” such as value proposition, customer segments, and ideal customer profile. StartupOS built its own lean canvas, pitch deck, and pricing model on its platform. At the time of its acquisition by PlanView, Spigit was used by 88 percent of Fortune 500 companies for innovation idea management. Today, the StartupOS platform provides access to AI-based learning curriculum tools and an opportunity dashboard which Pluschkell refers to as “a Pitchbook-style interface for earlier-stage companies” combined with an AI-driven matchmaking service that links entrepreneurs with a network of mentors, investors, and collaborators. While Bolt Startup AI is powered by data from its almost 7,000 pre-seed, seed, and early Series A startups, founders can hide their profiles, thereby protecting their privacy and preventing their data from being shared if so desired. The LLM has also ingested a significant number of SVB articles and periodicals. Just as Grammarly suggests spelling and punctuation edits, the StartupOS platform can review and suggest edits for key startup documents. Jodi McPherson is co-founder of WorkSimplr, a platform that matches student gig workers to interested companies. “StartupOS has a lot of great AI tools that have helped me hone my business model canvas and the things that I include in my data room,” she said. The affordability and accessibility of StartupOS further distinguish it from conventional accelerators. While traditional programs can cost a corporate sponsor upwards of $1 million, StartupOS offers them access for $120,000. Pluschkell affirms, "We built a digital tool that takes away a lot of the operating costs, allowing us to support a much larger portfolio. We are growing up to 1,000 startups a month." Silicon Valley Bank was an initial investor. “SVB invested in us because they wanted help finding those diamonds in the rough, before they reach Series A and there is more competition from other large banks. They wanted to find those prospects early,” Pluschkell said. SVB has continued to partner with StartupOS through a series of pitch competitions targeting underrepresented founders . “We’ve partnered with StartupOS because they are leaders in the ability to connect founders,” said Christopher Hollins, SVB’s head of global solutions sales and delivery. “StartupOS properly teaches and mentors them and gets them to a place where they show up well in front of financial institutions or those who are willing to fund,” Hollins added. With a high startup failure rate – StartupGenome found that 90 percent of startups fail and only 1.5 percent have a successful exit of $50 million or more – StartupOS’s new Bolt Startup AI tool intends to level the playing field, thereby maximizing startup success.
