Kate talked about how things were different after Derek fought Covid for nearly four years. Derek will be seen in a new ITV show, where he looks lovingly at his wife and talks a little bit, not long before he died in January, reports the Mirror. In the show, Kate talks about how she feels many different things for Derek, who she was married to for 19 years. She also said: "But how that translates into the relationship is a work in progress. Sometimes you show love with a big bunch of flowers, sometimes it's bringing a cup of tea at the right moment. I know he loves me, but how does he show that? "And I'm trying to work out if I feel loved by him. I know I am loved, so we have got a whole journey to go on there.", reports the Mirror . Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story (Image: ITV) Derek got sick with Covid in March 2020, with the illness affecting various parts of his body and he was forced to stay in the hospital for 18 months. At the start of the new ITV show, we see Derek having a hard time writing a note to Kate. She said: "The amazing thing is your writing is not as clear, because you haven't got the same dexterity, but it's exactly the same. I love it. When I first saw you write your name I burst into tears. I thought 'ah, he's still there'." Derek writes on a piece of paper and then reads out loud: "My name is Derek Draper, I want you to hear my story." Later in the show, Derek reads his birthday cards with his son Bill. However, the former lobbyist claims he gets very tired quickly and needs to rest. Kate tells him: "I love you... that's the moment to say it back, by the way! " Following the sad loss of Derek Draper in January this year, Kate Garraway: Derek's Story, documents the final year of his life. They both laugh when Derek smiles and says: "I love you too," but then he gets sleepy and Kate has to take off his glasses while she holds his hand. In another part of the show filmed in 2023, Derek says "I love you," without anyone asking. When Kate asks "Do you? " he says sweetly: "Yeah I do, course I do, course I do." In July 2023, the family spent some quality time in the woods near their house. Derek is in a wheelchair, pushed by his carer Jake, and they all enjoy the sun. Kate talks about how scared she was when Derek was very sick, revealing she thought she might lose him and felt a lot of pain. She says there's still a risk because of the damage to his health, yet she tries to enjoy the good times they have now instead of worrying too much about the past or future. When asked what he really stood for in a documentary, his swift response was "Equality" and "social justice". Reflecting on his loss, former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair commemorated Derek as an excellent colleague and cherished friend. The film captured Kate's profound sadness over the alteration of Derek, particularly because his once brilliant mind, which she fell in love with, had become his worst enemy. In addition, the film candidly portrays the hardships of Derek's daily life, demonstrating his caregiver, Jake, aiding him in entering and exiting a hyperbaric oxygen therapy session aimed to hasten his recovery. In another scene, a mobility coach fervently works towards getting Derek back on his feet. Overwhelmed, a tearful Derek decries himself as "pathetic", but Kate, ever the pillar of support, comforts him, saying: "It's OK, it is not pathetic, you are absolutely trying. You are so close darling. It's amazing." Mustering strength, Derek manages to stand using the frame, albeit with assistance. Derek also undertook a trip to a ground-breaking brain cell clinic in Mexico at the close of 2023, which unfortunately met with failure. Kate's last proper chat with Derek was before she went to bring him home. He was getting better and wanted to see his mates. He had a big surgery in Mexico, then they flew to a London hospital in a scary plane. Sadly, Derek didn't wake up after the heart attack. He passed away in the hospital with Kate and their kids, Darcey and Billy, by his side. Kate decided to finish the documentary for Derek, saying: "I think I've got to, because Derek wanted it. So it's for him. It's his legacy, if you like." She wants to keep fighting for better care because it was tough to get help and cost a lot of money. She said: "I can't just abandon this because Derek no longer needs it. We have to all understand that this level of abandonment of care is coming for us all, or for someone we love, unless we make it our priority."
