MacKenzie Scott has revealed she is donating $640million (£503million) to 361 small non-profitable organisations. The huge amount is more than double the billionaire philanthropist, author and ex-wife of
Jeff Bezos initially outlined in her call out. MacKenzie, will pay sums to 361 small non-profits who responded to an open call for applications that was launched last year. Yield Giving's initial giveaways began in 2019. At first, MacKenzie and her team chose a number of organisations without an application process and handed out several large, unrestricted gifts. Following her latest handouts, she released a brief message praising the organisation that managed the open call, Lever for Change. She also complimented the evaluators for “their roles in creating this pathway to support for people working to improve access to foundational resources in their communities," and called them "vital agents of change". In total, 6,353 non-profits applied to the $1 million (£787,000) grants when the applications first opened. In the end, 279 non-profits have been given $2million (£1.57million) after they received top scores from the external review panel. Amazon founder five years ago, MacKenzie has given away $16.5billion (£13billion). According to Forbes, she has a net worth of $37.5billion (£29.5billion). It rates her as the fourth richest woman in the world. MacKenzie has pledged that she will give away half of her wealth over her life time. Most of her fortune comes from a four per cent stake in Amazon that was included in her divorce settlement in 2019. Some of her past donations include handing out more than $3.8 billion (£3million) to 465 organisations over the course of nine months in 2022. She has also gifted $436million (£343million) to Habitat for Humanity and a further $84.5million (£66.5milion) to Girl Scouts of the USA, which remains the organisations largest ever donation from a single individual.
